Abstract

The essay examines the political and intellectual debate that defined Bill Clinton's presidency. It explores his ambition to reform the relationship between economics and politics, as between society and the state. This effort was framed under the concept of a “new covenant,” which represented a departure from the New Deal order. Instead, Clinton advocated for principles associated with neoliberal and conservative ideologies, summarized by the term “third way".
